External roller blinds, facade blinds and solar-powered screens – modern sun protection

Modern sunshades for homes and commercial buildings

External roller shutters, façade blinds, and screens are among the most frequently chosen solutions in modern residential and commercial construction. Systems equipped with solar motors , which utilize solar energy instead of traditional power from the building's electrical system, are becoming increasingly popular .

Solar drives for roller shutters, blinds and screens combine comfort of use , energy savings and ecology , meeting the needs of investors, architects and end users.

What are solar-powered external blinds and sunshades?

Roller shutters, façade blinds, and solar screens are shading systems that utilize a solar-powered motor . A photovoltaic panel mounted on a cassette or guide rail charges the drive battery, which then powers the mechanism that raises and lowers the shade.

This solution eliminates the need to connect roller shutters or blinds to the 230 V electrical network, which significantly simplifies installation and reduces investment costs.

Advantages of external roller shutters, facade blinds and solar screens

Energy savings and lower electricity bills

Solar motors utilize free solar energy , meaning no electricity costs are incurred at home. Over the course of a year or more, users will notice real savings, especially with multiple solar shading systems.

Additionally, external blinds and screens reduce interior heating in summer and heat loss in winter, which reduces air conditioning and heating costs.

Energy independence and sunless operation

Modern solar motors are equipped with efficient batteries. For example, Somfy solar motors can operate for up to 40–45 days without access to sunlight , assuming several raising and lowering cycles per day.

This means that external roller shutters, facade blinds and solar screens remain fully functional even in winter or during prolonged cloud cover.

  • Flexible adjustment of the amount of light to your needs.
  • Increased energy efficiency for your home or office.
  • Modern design that suits a variety of interiors.

The scope of our implementation

After selecting the appropriate solution, we began implementation. Our work included precise measurements and advice on selecting the SKYTWIN system, professional installation of roller blinds and screens, and configuration of automatic controls for convenient management of solar radiation levels.
The use of the system allowed for a modern, elegant appearance of the façade, while significantly improving the thermal and visual comfort inside the building.

Heat transfer coefficient (Uw) test results

In order to objectively confirm the effectiveness of the applied solution, the system provider performed tests according to the standard PE-EN ISO 12567-1:2010.
The test was carried out on a window with dimensions of 1230 × 1480 mm in the system MB-86N Aluprof, with triple glazing 4/18/4/18/4 and warm frame.
The system used SKYTWIN with PA39 slatted roller blind and fabric screen Serge 600 001001.

Measurement Configuration Uw result [W/m²K] Change from base window
1 Window without blinds 0,852 100 %
2 Window + blinds down 0,739 −13%
3 Window + screen down 0,839 −1%
4 Window + blind and screen down 0,701 −18%

Analysis of the results clearly shows that the use of the SKYTWIN system improves the thermal insulation of the entire assembly. When both the roller blind and the screen were lowered simultaneously, the Uw coefficient was reduced by as much as 18% . It's worth emphasizing, however, that the study only addresses the heat transfer coefficient, not parameters related to solar radiation.

Properties of screen fabrics

To fully understand the system's effectiveness, it's important to examine the performance of screen fabrics. Each fabric is characterized by three main components of its radiation balance:

  • Rs (Solar Reflection) – the amount of energy reflected from the fabric,
  • As (Solar Absorption) – the amount of energy absorbed by the fabric,
  • ST (Solar Transmission) – the amount of energy that passes into the interior.

The relationship between them is described by the equation: Rs + As + ST = 100%.
In practice, this means that the higher the reflection coefficient (Rs), the less heating occurs inside.

The color of the fabric is crucial:

  • light fabrics (e.g. white, sand, gray) are characterized by high reflection and low ST coefficient (approx. 5–10%),
  • dark fabrics (e.g. graphite, black) have lower reflection but higher optical translucency – ST is usually 10-15%.

Total energy transmission coefficient – gtot

Another important parameter describing the performance of sunshades is the External Solar Factor (ESF) , also known as gtot . It measures the total amount of solar energy that penetrates the interior after taking into account the influence of the glass, fabric, and the position of the sunshade.

Partition type ST ESF (gtot) Effect
Double glazing without cover ~ 0.75 ~ 0.75 High thermal gains
Glass + external screen bright 0.05–0.10 0.07–0.15 Very good protection
Glass + dark inner fabric 0.10–0.20 0.25–0.35 Moderate protection

This comparison shows how important the location of the cover is – external screen systems provide the best protection against interior overheating.

On-site assembly – the solution used

In the analyzed implementation, the Serge Ferrari Soltis Veozip 7605-51185 fabric was used , with the following parameters:

  • ST = 9%
  • RS = 50%
  • AS = 41%
  • TV nh = 8%
  • gtot = 0.04 (for 4+16+4 glass with argon, g = 0.32, U = 1.1)

In practice, this means that only 8% of visible light and 9% of solar energy penetrate the screen . These values confirm the very high effectiveness of solar protection while maintaining the elegant appearance of the façade.

Conclusions and Summary

In summary, the SKYTWIN system with Soltis Veozip 7605-51185 fabric provides exceptional thermal and visual protection. By reflecting approximately half of solar radiation and reducing energy transmission to 9%, interiors remain comfortable even on hot days.

This system is the ideal solution for those who value functionality, durability, and modern aesthetics. Our clients are already enjoying a pleasant indoor climate – regardless of outdoor conditions.

Roleto - screen or SkyTwin - a combination of fabric and roller blinds DOOR Filipek cross-section

The most important advantages of SkyTwin

  • Dual function in one product — space saving and simpler installation compared to installing two separate systems.
  • Better thermal protection all year round — the roller blind reduces heat loss in winter, the screen reduces heating in summer.
  • Light and visibility control — Screen fabrics allow you to regulate the penetration of light, keeping the view outside without strong glare.
  • Durability and resistance to weather conditions — Technical fabrics (e.g., from the Soltis range by Serge Ferrari) are designed for UV, wind, and moisture resistance. The manufacturer guarantees an appropriate warranty on the products. Fabric specifications can be selected during order configuration, taking into account fabric type, color, and openness factor (OF).
  • Aesthetics and façade fitting — many colors and textures, possible to harmonize with the facade.
  • Wind-resistant zip fabrics – thanks to the use of special ZIP guidance, the screens are tested and certified based on wind resistance in the appropriate wind classes.

Who is SkyTwin the best choice for?

  • Owners of houses and apartments with large glazing (terraces, balconies) who want to combine protection, privacy, and energy savings. Combining these two products provides significant benefits in terms of heat transfer and solar radiation.
  • Investors in public buildings and office buildings, where energy certificates and acoustic/lighting comfort are important.
  • People who value a minimalist look – one system instead of two installed separately.

How fabric screen in SkyTwin and what technical features does it offer?

Manufacturers of screen fabrics (Aluprof's offering includes Serge Ferrari and other renowned brands such as Copaco) offer materials designed specifically for outdoor sun protection. The key technical properties of these fabrics include:

  • Light transmittance and openness factor — Different options (e.g., 4%, 14%, etc.) determine how much light and view is let in. This allows you to find a compromise between visibility and sun protection.
  • Protection against solar radiation and heat — Selected Soltis fabrics can block a significant portion of solar energy (for example, up to approximately 97% of heat in certain variants), acting as a “shield” that reduces cooling requirements.
  • UV resistance and color fastness — The pigments and production technologies used ensure long-lasting resistance to fading. The use of glass fiber significantly extends the fabric's lifespan and resistance to temperature changes.
  • Mechanical strength — high resistance to stretching, tearing, and weather conditions (rain, wind). Précontraint® is an example of technology that improves dimensional stability and durability.

Précontraint® technology , patented by Serge Ferrari , is used to produce flexible composites with exceptional lightness and dimensional stability. This process applies a polymer coating to a polyester (PET) micro-cable carrier, maintaining the material in a state of biaxial tension—in both the warp and weft directions—throughout the production process. This technology gives the materials unique properties, including high resistance to deformation under load, significantly extending their durability.

The impact of the roller-screen (SkyTwin) on building parameters

  • Energy savingThe outer screen fabric reduces the greenhouse effect (less heat gets into the interior), and the roller blind improves winter insulation—this combination reduces air conditioning and heating costs. Fabric manufacturer sources indicate a significant reduction in heat transfer in Soltis models (e.g., Soltis 92).
  • Visual comfort: less glare, ability to maintain the view to the outside while controlling the light intensity.
  • Protection of interior furnishings: reducing UV rays that cause fabrics and furniture to fade.
  • Acoustics: external blinds improve sound insulation from outside; when combined with a screen, the effect can be enhanced by providing a second layer between the interior and exterior. (Depending on the design and materials)

Principles of application and assembly

  1. Selecting the fabric variant — choose the openness depending on the window orientation: on the south side, less openness (greater protection) is preferred, while east/west you can use more "transparent" fabrics.
  2. Integration with the window/frame — SkyTwin is designed for installation in a built-in structure or above a window opening; the installation should be performed by an authorized installer to maintain the tightness and proper functioning of both layers.
  3. controlling — SkyTwin systems are available with a wired or radio drive (remote control/weather automation), which facilitates daily operation and programming of behavior in strong sun/wind conditions.
  4. Wind & rain considerations — in extreme weather conditions, external screens have specific wind resistance classes; fabric and system manufacturers provide permissible loads — check the specifications before installation.

How to clean and care for screen fabric?

The fabric manufacturer (e.g. Serge Ferrari) recommends simple, regular maintenance procedures that significantly extend the life of the fabric:

  1. Periodic cleaning (easy staining): Rinse the surface with clean water and wipe with a soft cloth or sponge. Avoid using products containing solvents (e.g., white spirit).
  2. Cleaning for more difficult stains: use dedicated detergents recommended by the manufacturer (e.g. Cleaner 500 and/ or Formula S in Serge Ferrari documents) - apply, leave on briefly, brush gently with a soft brush and rinse thoroughly with water. The pH of the detergent used should be in the acceptable range (usually 5-11).
  3. Spot cleaning: immediately remove bird droppings, resin and other substances that may damage the coating or dye.
  4. Cyclic checks: check the condition of the guides, fasteners and roller shutter mechanics; remove any leaves and sand from the cassettes and guides.
  5. Avoid aggressive brushes and solvents — may damage the fabric coating and shorten its lifespan.

Their elegant appearance, the ability to paint the aluminum elements in any color, and intuitive operation make them an excellent choice for investors, architects, and contractors.

Screen characteristics

Construction and materials

Reflexes consist of the following elements:

  • Adaptation box – aluminum, available in versions painted in any color from the RAL palette and other powder paints.
  • Aluminum guides – ensure stable guidance of the ZIP fabric, minimizing loosening and waving of the material.
  • Bottom strip – responsible for the fabric tension and aesthetic appearance of the entire system.
  • Fabric with an openness of OF 5% – provides an optimal combination of sun protection and access to natural light, while allowing ventilation.

Technologies and functionality

  • ZIP system – the fabric is guided in guides using a zipper principle, which ensures its high stability even in strong winds and allows it to function as a mosquito net.
  • Electric control – can be operated via remote control, mobile application or integration with an intelligent building management system.

The process of installing the reflector

  1. Preparation and measurements

The first step is to take precise measurements of the window opening or the installation location of the reflector. It is important to take into account the dimensions of the box, guides and bottom strip to ensure an aesthetic and functional effect.

  1. Installing the box

The adapter box can be mounted:

  • To the facade wall – this ensures maximum stability.
  • To the inside of the window recess – a more discreet variant, but requires precise fitting of the elements.
  1. Installing the guides

Aluminum guides are mounted along the edge of the window opening, ensuring they are perfectly level. In ZIP systems, it is crucial to precisely match the guides to the bottom strip to avoid play and uneven fabric guidance.

  1. Fabric fixing

The fabric is fed into the ZIP guides and hooked into the tensioning mechanism. It is important that the material tension is optimal, which will prevent the surface from creasing.

  1. Connecting the drive and testing

After installing the mechanical elements, the electric motor is connected to the power supply and the control is programmed (remote control, mobile application). The correctness of the fabric movement is tested and minor adjustments are made if necessary.

Technical challenges and how to solve them

  • Installation in places exposed to strong winds – the use of the ZIP system minimizes the risk of damage and deformation.
  • Integration with the smart building system – compatible drives and control controllers must be selected.
  • Matching to unusual facade colors – powder coating of aluminium elements in any RAL colour allows for harmonious integration with the building’s architecture.

Benefits of using refleksol

  • Effective sun protection – reduction of interior heating, which reduces air-conditioning costs.
  • Aesthetics and elegance – ability to adjust colors to individual needs.
  • Additional mosquito net function – the ZIP system effectively protects the interior against insects.
  • Convenient controls – can be operated via remote control, application or intelligent building system.

Installing screens is an investment in the comfort, aesthetics and functionality of the building. Precise workmanship and the use of high-quality materials guarantee the durability and effectiveness of the screens. Both investors and architects should consider this solution as an integral element of modern architecture, improving both the comfort of users and the energy efficiency of the building.
